The global Islamic finance industry has witnessed a steady double-digit growth in assets over the past few years. The appeal for the Islamic finance is its simplicity in concept and risk sharing. During the recent global financial crisis, there was not any major collapse in the Islamic banking industry. Proponents of Islamic banks suggest that resilience that Islamic banks demonstrated during the crisis was due to the business model of Islamic banks that do not allow for investment in speculative assets such credit default swaps. On the other side, it is argued that Islamic banking sector was not systemically big enough to be affected by the economic shocks during that period.

Now Islamic financial assets are estimated to surpass the USD 3 trillion and further growth is expected. The share of Islamic banking assets in at least ten countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, Iran, and Pakistan, are above 10 percent of the overall banking sector. The theoretical promise of risk sharing in the Islamic banking not only provides the opportunities for an alternative approach to conventional banking but also pose some potentially significant challenges to the global financial system. The growing systemic importance of Islamic banks presents important questions for policy makers, regulators, and practitioners in the areas of risk management, regulations, and supervision in the interconnected and integrated global financial system.

Against this backdrop, Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), in collaboration with the College of Economics and Finance, Sultan Qaboos University is organizing a two-day Conference on Islamic Banking and Finance with a particular focus on Risk Management, Regulation, and Supervision of Islamic financial institutions. The conference aims to explore a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:
