INTRODUCTION
The 20th century was quite challenging. The industry deregulation in the 1980s followed by the rise of new technologies – such as internet and mobile telephones – created a very dynamic and complex business environment. So far, the 21st century has been equally – if not more – challenging. The challenges of managing complex organizations in a dynamic environment remain. This means that the fields of strategic management, organizational behavior, decision science, marketing and many more are still as relevant today as they were a few decades ago. The new challenges seem to be more technological – the rise of artificial intelligence among others – and political – the change to the globalization narrative, the growing isolation of the United States. Prevailing changes to the environment add to the complexity of management in the 21st century.
Despite these, the opportunities in the 21st centuries are however fascinating. New organizations – like Google and Facebook – have redefined entire industries. New technologies promise answers to problems that have plagued humanity for a long time – such as medical breakthrough. The democratization of technology suggests a democratization of management. The seasoned top-down organizations of the past are making way to fast-moving, highly decentralized organizations, run by millennials for millennials. On top of these concerns, there are other less well known concerns. For example, the Islamic management agenda is still alive and thriving. More and more books and papers are being published in this area.
This conference proposes to assemble thinkers, practitioners and enthusiasts to address these and trending topics and allow participants to make sense of the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
