BACKGROUND
The International Conference on Special Education (ICSE) is a biennial event organized by SEAMEO SEN, a key initiative to enhance special education across Southeast Asia and beyond. The 6th ICSE, set to take place in July 2025, proposes to center the conference around the pivotal theme of Technology for Disabilities: A Path to Inclusion. This theme underscores the potential of technological tools, devices, and platforms to significantly improve learning experiences and opportunities for learners with disabilities. By providing tailored solutions, accessibility features, and alternative learning methods, technology can foster inclusivity and support diverse educational needs.
The 6th ICSE 2025 aims to highlight the importance of Technology in Disability-Inclusive Education as it aligns with the global push towards inclusive education. Emphasizing technology's role reflects the organization's commitment to leveraging innovative solutions to address the unique challenges faced by learners with disabilities. By bringing this theme to the forefront, SEAMEO SEN aspires to inspire and facilitate meaningful discussions and developments in integrating technology into educational systems.
A distinctive feature of the 6th ICSE is its enhanced implementation approach. Unlike the previous five conferences, ICSE 2025 will incorporate policy dialogue and multi-stakeholder panel discussions in addition to the usual series of workshops, paper presentations, and exhibitions.
Building on the success of the 1st Innovation for Disability-Inclusive Education Competition (iDIEC) held during ICSE 2023, the 2nd iDIEC 2025 will be held concurrently with the 6th ICSE 2025. This competition aims to promote a culture of creativity and innovation in disability-inclusive education, addressing Southeast Asia's issues with practical solutions. It seeks to identify outstanding talents for product development, further research, and commercialization, especially among educators in the field of disability-inclusive education.
By integrating these new elements such as, policy dialogue and multi-stakeholder panel discussions and focusing on Technology in Disability-Inclusive Education, the 6th ICSE aims to drive forward-thinking discussions and initiatives that will positively impact the landscape of special education in the region.
