5th International Plant Breeding Conference 2022

8 - 9 March 2022

Online Conference

BACKGROUND

Plant breeding is an important field of research for improvement of yield and quality of plant production. The achievements of plant breeding have had tremendous on economic and national   development. Advanced techniques and tools would be able to assist plant breeders in their  practice   of   selection   and strategies   for   plant   improvement.   This   Conference  will  be  its  fifth  debut  of  Plant  Breeding  Conference  Series organised by the Genetics Society of Malaysia, which begun in 2012. Due to  the  overwhelming  success  of  the  first,  second,  third  and  fourth conferences, we are pushing this fifth conferences into a bigger role in accelerating   synergies   in   plant   breeding   and   genetics.   This   2-day   conference  will  address  the  latest  advances  in  various  plant  breeding  activities and its achievements. More than 20 keynote and invited speakers will  be  presenting  their  views  and  findings  in  this  conference.  The conference will provide opportunities and gather as many plant breeders, agricultural scientists, geneticist, researchers, academicians, biotechnologies  and  student  to  share  their  latest  knowledge,  experience  and achievements in plant improvement programmes.

CONFERENCE TRACK

Pre-Breeding Strategies

Determining and introgressing desirable traits or genes from unadapted plants or wild species into breeding lines is a vital step in plant breeding. This activity can develop an intermediate set of genetic materials or desired agronomic background of plant materials that can be used in producing new plant varieties, in which can benefit us in many ways such as delivering nutritious food for present and future generations. Research in this area is important to prepare genetic pools for breeding programs.

Conventional Plant Breeding

Conventional plant breeding involves manipulation of genetic makeup of the plants. Techniques such as selection, backcrossing, single seed descent, and pedigree are approaches that have been employed to produce elite plant variety with desirable traits. High acceptance of bred lines derived from conventional plant breeding makes this technique still relevant and therefore increasing production of agriculture products.

Modern Plant Breeding

Molecular breeding represents a great opportunity to consider the variability and uncertainties that are involved in the agri-food production chain. New advancements in technologies such as molecular marker, gene editing, genome selection, targeted mutagenesis, and precision agriculture technologies offer an excellent opportunity to accelerate and support productivity and efficiency that shift towards an innovation- and a knowledge-based economy.

Bioeconomy

Plant breeding is a prime driver for bioeconomy with the development of high-yielding crops and plants with new or improved traits. With the increase in world population and challenges faced by climate change, plant breeding has significantly contributed to bioeconomy by assuring sustainable biomass feedstock for food, feed, health, energy, and industrial applications.
