BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:
Mark S. Nixon is a Professor in the Vision, Learning and Control research group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. He was previously the President of the IEEE Biometrics Council and Vice Chair IEEE PSPB. He is a Fellow of the IET, Fellow of the IAPR (for services to biometrics and computer vision) and the Distinguished Fellow of the BMVA 2015. His research interests are in image processing and computer vision and his team develops new techniques for static and moving shape extraction applied in medical image and behaviour analysis. He and his team were early workers in automatic face recognition, came to pioneer automatic gait recognition, and later soft biometrics for human identification. His books include Feature extraction and image processing for computer vision (4th Ed Academic Press 2019) and Human ID based on Gait (Springer 2005). He has been chair/program co-chair for many conferences, especially biometrics ones (inc. BMVC’98, ICPR’04, IEEE BTAS’10, ICPR’16, IEEE ISBA’16, IAPR/IEEE IJCB’17, and ICB’19).
ABSTRACT:
Biometrics has made amazing progress in its (relatively) short history. This speaker started his research in 1984, on face recognition, before it was even called biometrics. Then, computers were slow and memory was expensive, but we showed there was potential. Fast forward to now, when computers are fast and memory is cheap: with modern tools we can now produce a laboratory system which can achieve recognition, and in an afternoon. Biometrics helps the lives of most people on this planet by its virtues of speed and convenience. So it is time to take stock on our progress. As biometrics researchers, where are we going, and where should we go? Deep learning has enabled fast and accurate processes but we need to learn more of the underlying science. Can we deploy this capability for identification elsewhere, say forensic science? Is the underlying question what is identity and what does it imply? This talk will aim to introduce these questions, in the context of my own work on gait and soft biometrics, though the solutions and answers often remain for future work.

ABOUT OUR CONFERENCE:
The 2nd International Recent Trends in Engineering, Advanced Computing and Technology Conference (RETREAT) 2021 is organised by MN Smart Solution, Malaysia in collaboration with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Malaysia. It will be held on 1-3 December 2021. As concerns increased over the pandemic of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), the organising committee HAS DECIDED to move RETREAT 2021 from a physical to VIRTUAL Conference.
This conference provides lots of networking opportunities to scholars, professors and practitioners for corporate and development sectors. The scope of this conference is broad and covers many aspects of international technology perspectives. This conference aims to provide scholarly platform to participants to share their valuable knowledge and current information with others. The conference is expected to attract the participation of academics, researchers and professional practitioners of 'engineering' and 'computing' not only in Malaysia, across Europe but also abroad. Knowledge sharing of ideas among academics and professionals has the potential to bridge the gaps and build an understanding on the various aspects of 'engineering' and 'computing' nationally or internationally.
