BACKGROUND

This conference is the fourth international conference organized by the Institute of Zakat Research and Innovation (Institut Penyelidikan dan Inovasi Zakat - IPIZ), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in collaboration with the Kedah Zakat Board (Lembaga Zakat Negeri Kedah - LZNK).  First ZAWED Conference which is ZAWED 2019 was successfully implemented on 1-2 December 2019 at Adya Hotel, Langkawi. In 2022, the 2nd ZAWED Conference (ZAWED 2022) was held at Miri Sarawak on 27-28 December 2022. Subsequently, the 3rd ZAWED Conference (ZAWED 2024) was successfully convened on 26 and 27 October 2024 at Hatten Hotel, Melaka.

This conference held to discuss issues and matters related to the management of zakat, waqf, baitulmal, hibah, Islamic business and other Islamic institutions to identify the best methods to be implemented for the economic development of ummah.  In addition, IPIZ aspires to remain actively engaged in the organisation of high-impact seminars, in alignment with its vision and mission as a centre of research excellence. This initiative not only supports the aspirations of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015–2025, but also aligned with the new national education direction articulated in the Malaysia Future Education Blueprint 2026–2036. This blueprint emphasises comprehensive reforms of the education system, including the strengthening of a robust research culture, the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), and the enhancement of collaboration between educational institutions and industry towards achieving globally competitive academic excellence.

OBJECTIVES
a. Introduce and elucidate the fundamental concepts of zakat management, taxation, waqf, baitulmal, hibah, Islamic business, and Islamic institutions within the framework of ummah economic development to zakat institutions, academics, postgraduate students, as well as public and private sector practitioners.
b. Discuss and examine contemporary issues and challenges related to the management of zakat, taxation, waqf, baitulmal, hibah, Islamic business, Islamic institutions, and economic resources in the governance of the public and private sectors for the advancement of ummah economic development.
c. Identify best practices associated with zakat, taxation, waqf, baitulmal, hibah, Islamic business, Islamic institutions, and economic resources in efforts to strengthen ummah economic development.
d. Provide a strategic platform for stakeholders from the public and private sectors from top management to operational levels, both domestically and internationally to share knowledge, ideas, experiences, and challenges within an inclusive and high-impact forum.
e. Offer opportunities to expand IPIZ’s and LZNK’s strategic collaboration networks with key stakeholders at the national and international levels, thereby strengthening the institutions’ positions within the global education and research ecosystem.
